My webapp cannot start with only error SEVERE: Error listenerStart, SEVERE: Context [] startup failed due to previous errors
Usually this is cause by errors inside your listener while you have configured log4j but not initialized so log4j cannot capture any logs and nothing is show up in catalina.out.
To debug this error, the easiest way is to do the following:
1. remove all log4j reference in WEB-INF (both log4j.jar and log4j.properties)
2. restart tomcat
3. inspect catalina.out
